GROUPS WITH A STRONG COMMUNITY PRESENCE
ACORN
www.acorn.org
This national low-income community group has had major recent troubles, and I considered omitting them. But few groups have involved as many low-income people in social justice issues, and with as major results. They've gotten sloppy at points, and that's made it easier for their political opponents to smear them, but they've done valuable work from their founding in the welfare rights work, to legitimatley registering over a million voters in the last election cycle (a congressional report recently cleared them of any improprieties). If you want to read more, here are useful articles from the Washington Post and Alternet.
